Spring Gardening: It's All About Colour!

Frankie Flowers takes us through a few varieties of flowering shrub that will add a pop of colour to your garden.

It’s springtime, and you know what that means: it’s high time you bring a little bit of colour into your garden.

One of the best ways to add a pop of vibrant colour is to look at the variety of flowering shrubs available.

Before you buy, however, take note of how much light your space gets, and what your hardiness zone is. You can find the latter here.

Here are a few of Frankie Flowers’s faves:

Flowering crabapple – The dwarf form called ‘Coral Burst’ flowers out with a nice pink shade, and adds nice impact to the side of a driveway or as an ornamental addition to the center of a garden

Forsythia – This plant flowers yellow first, and is great for early-season colour

Invincibelle hydrangea – This is a great choice for later season colour. The sturdy stems won’t fall over, and the blooms are gorgeous, white balls

Spiraea – Consider the Bridal Wreath of Gold Flames versions. Be aware that this plant grows quite large, so if you don’t have a lot of space you’ll have to prune it back from time to time.

Ornamental Pear – There’s no fruit on this lovely tree, but it does produce a nice bloom and works well as a smaller almost-shade tree to add to your space.
