The best snacks for weight loss

Dr. Joey Shulman shared a few of her favourite snack choices to avoid binge eating come dinner time.

Weight loss takes planning and routine, and often due to stress eating or mindless eating we forget to eat, and end up making poor food choices.  Nutritionist Dr. Joey Shulman shared a few of her favourite snack choices to avoid binge eating come dinner time.

Dr. Joey suggests adding a morning snack (this is optional) and an afternoon snack (this is the important one) to your daily regimen for the best weight loss results.

Snacking is important as it keeps your energy levels constant and prevents overeating during main meal times.  This is especially important come 3 or 4 p.m.  Dr. Joey says the perfect snack must have the perfect balance of calorie count, fats, proteins, and sugars.

Here are a few snack ideas, perfect for any time of day, whether you are looking to crush the before-dinner hunger, or satisfy an after-dinner sweet tooth.

For a hearty snack in the late afternoon, take a look at Dr. Joey’s ‘Look 10 years younger’ trail mix.  This quick, grab-and-go snack is filling, and will keep your appetite in a control before dinner.

A coffee and a healthy granola bar in the late afternoon will also suffice in keeping your appetite suppressed until dinner, Dr. Joey recommends.  Just be sure to avoid the bars packed with unhealthy fats and sugars.

If you are looking for something to snack on after dinner, yogurts are the way to go, according to Dr. Joey.  Fat-free Greek yogurts with lemon or lime are great at satisfying that sweet tooth.  Top with a granola, and you have a healthy—and satisfying—dessert.

You can never go wrong with whole foods, Dr. Joey says.  Fruits and vegetables like fruits, sliced peppers with goat cheese, and carrots and hummus will always be fool-proof ways of staying healthy when looking for a snack.
