Carson Arthur shares his all-time favourite pest and weed killers, and a solution to keep pets away from your plants.

Homemade ‘bug killer’:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp orange oil – very important
  • 1 squirt dish soap – helps stick this to the plant leaves
  • 3-4 litres of water – spray right on the leaves

Method:

  1. Combine the orange oil, dish soap and water in large container
  2. Spray leaves and soil … cover with garbage bags for 3 days!

Carson’s weed killer:

Ingredients:

  • boiling water
  • vinegar

Method:

  1. Soak the weed
  2. Then torch them with Lee Valley Weed Torch!

For weeds on patio, add salt to the weeds.  Be very careful not to salt your soil.  This is bad for your soil and will ruin it for years.

Secondary weed killer:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups white vinegar
  • ¼ tbsp table salt
  • 2 tsp dish soap

Method:

  1. Mix, and spray directly onto the weeds.

Also, if you are looking to keep pets away from your garden, try this pet repellent:

Ingredients:

  • orange peels
  • water

Method:

  1. Soak  old orange peels in water for several weeks, allowing to ferment.
  2. Dogs hate the smell of citrus and the fermented smell acts as an excellent deterrent.

Note:  Never use cayenne pepper. This can really harm animals including dogs, cats, squirrels, and rabbits.
