Getting a dog for your family

Danielle Hodges shares four tips to help pick the right pup for you.

So, you’ve decided it’s time to get a dog? Knowing your options and choosing the right dog for your family is a huge decision. Danielle Hodges shares four tips to help pick the right pup for you.

1. Research the breed you’re interested in thoroughly.

Danielle’s number one point: don’t get a dog based on how it looks! It’s important to consider that every breed has strong tendencies and is not a good fit for every family. Depending on the breed, your dog will have different exercise requirements, shedding tendencies and tolerance for stimulation. Be sure to meet an adult version of the dog you’re considering. One of the best ways to do your research is to talk to other people.

2. Consider your family situation.

Before you make your decision, take your situation and lifestyle into account. Do you have small children? Health problems that limit mobility? Vacation often? Work long hours? These are all important factors when deciding to add a dog to the family.

3. Find a good breeder if you’d like a specific breed.

Once you’ve figured out which breed is right for you, it’s time to research breeders. Remember, the puppies should be hand raised and well socialized and the breeder should give you info on the health of the parents of your pup. If the breeder will not let you visit the puppies, this is a big red flag. Danielle says, this might mean the conditions the dogs are being raised in could be questionable.

“Avoid puppy mills and “backyard breeders.” Says Danielle, look for a breeder that is a certified Canadian Kennel Club member.

4. Consider a Rescue.

Rescues are always a great option, even if you’re looking for a specific breed. There are rescues that focuses solely on specific breeds, give them a call to know your options. It’s important to know what you’re getting, and a good rescue will have an extensive screening process and temperament evaluations.
