Top 5 ways to put your garden to bed for winter

Frankie tells us what you should be doing in your garden to prepare it for winter and spring.

With cooler temperatures in the air, you might think that gardening time is over, but our Frank Ferragine doesn’t agree. There’s no snow on the ground which means there’s still time to prepare your garden for spring, according to our gardening expert! Frankie shares the top 5 things you should be doing in your garden right now.

1. Clean up the leaves

Be sure to get rid of all those extra leaves! As beautiful as they are, when they fall on the ground, they create a mat which suffocates your lawn. At the same time, clean up the rest of your garden: remove weeds, any diseased plants, and any annuals that have died.

2. Feed the lawn

“It’s like a big, big bear that you have to feed,” jokes Frankie. Don’t forget to fertilize your lawn. When buying a fertilizer, Frankie recommends looking for ones that are high in nitrogen.

3. Improve your soil

After gardening all summer, you have to add some nutrients back in to the soil. Add some manure and fresh soil to get this nutrient boost. The best part is that you don’t even have to till your soil as the winter and snow do that for you!

4. Plant for spring

“Now is the time to start thinking about those spring flowering bulbs,” says Frankie. When planting these, you’ll want to be sure you’re following the size of the plants and pay attention to bloom times.

5. Protect your plants

When it comes to those plants that are going to be exposed to high winds and sun, try using burlap to protect them. You can even find burlap in multiple colours now to match your décor.
