The top 3 ways to combat summer frizz

Hair experts, Maurice Fiorio, Grace Tartaglia, and Bill Rowley share their tips and tricks to keep your hair humidity-free this summer.

With the sun in the sky and the warm rays shining down on your skin, it’s safe to say sweet summertime is on its way. But for your hair, this can only mean one thing: frizz.

No matter what texture your hair is, it’s impossible to avoid this dreaded result of simply walking outside in 20+ degree weather. This mad scientist-esque style is probably the last direction you want your locks to go, but thanks to the summer heat, it may seem we have no other option than to just let the frizz fly. Copious amounts of hairspray combined with downward strokes of your comb only leaves you with a “Greased Lightning”-inspired look — which probably isn’t what you are going for either.

Fortunately for us, our experts Maurice Fiorio, Grace Tartaglia, and Bill Rowley have heard our plea. Each stylist has shared their favourite way to combat summer humidity to help tame your mane — once and for all.

Gel:

Maurice Fiorio suggests using a gel that has some weight to it. This doesn’t mean a heavy clay-like gel, but one that is thick enough to keep your fly-aways in place. Here’s how to make Maurice’s suggestion work for you:

  1. Once your hair is damp, sleek on a small amount of gel with your hands.
  2. Comb through your hair from to top to bottom, evenly distributing the product throughout your whole head.
  3. Using your hands, massage your scalp to create some volume and to loosen your hair’s natural texture
  4. Let it air-dry. Once it is dry, toss around your hair and style.

Grooming cream:

Grace Tartaglia recommends a men’s grooming cream (yes, for both men and women). A cream will not only smooth out your hair’s cuticles, but will also control your natural texture. This option is great if you want to style your hair after it dries with a flat iron or curler.

Curling iron or wand:

Bill Rowley is a big believer in working with the frizz and disguising it with a curl. The heat of the iron/wand will stretch out your natural curl. Once you hit the humidity, it will seep inside your locks and actually plump up your curls for a little extra volume.
