Keeping your lawn healthy for fall

Get the right materials and you'll be able to keep your grass growing green with the change of season.

Having a beautiful-looking lawn for the fall shouldn’t be hard to maintain. Gardening expert Frank Ferragine teaches us how to pick the right materials to keep your grass growing green with the change of season.

  • Buy a turf builder specifically for fall, with a high nitrogen number: There are three numbers together on the front of the packaging, for nitrogen, phosphorus and hydrogen. The first number is the nitrogen, which will help the lawn grow and simultaneously feed it.
  • Cut short: With a high nitrogen number, your grass is bound to grow. Frank advises you to cut your grass short to about 2 1/2 inches in height, because snow in the winter could flatten grass blades if they’re too long.
  • Grass seeds during fall are ideal: Using grass seeds can also help cover up the lawn because weeds grow in exposed soil. Grass seed spreaders should be filled on the driveway, not on the grass, since spilling seeds on the lawn could burn it out.
