1 hour DIYs: Update your home in an afternoon

Simple DIYs to update your old furniture!

Updated side table

Paint a side table and add a decorative motif for an instant update.

  1. Change the colour of your side table using paint that’s meant to adhere to the material your side table is made of.
  2.  Allow the paint to dry completely.
  3. Tape or stick a decorative stencil in place.
  4.  Dip a stencil paint brush into a contrasting paint colour, then blot most of the paint off on a paper towel.
  5.  Lightly dab the paint brush onto the stencil, keeping the brush vertical to prevent paint from seeping in under the stencil.
  6.  Remove the stencil while the paint is still wet.
  7. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Toy cubby for kids
Add legs to a laid-flat bookcase, then line it with decorative paper.

  1. If the bookcase has a particleboard backing, replace it with melamine for durability.
  2. Change the colour of your bookcase using paint that’s meant to adhere to the material your bookcase is made of.
  3. Drill legs into the back of the bookcase. (If you want to paint the legs the same colour as the bookcase, drill the legs in before you paint.)
  4. Secure the shelves in place by drilling in screws on either side (on the top and bottom of each shelf).
  5. Line the interior of the cubbies with decorative paper using a spray adhesive, or cut adhesive shelf liners to size.
  6. Spray the decorative paper with a sealant to ensure durability.
