Jillian Harris’ Play Dough Recipe

Keep the kids entertained for hours with this DIY play dough tutorial!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2/3 cup of salt
  • 4 teaspoons of cream of tarter
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • food colouring
  • 1 teaspoon glycerin (optional) makes it a little bit more soft and bendy

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Mix all of the ingredients into a small pot except for the glycerin and food colouring.
  2. Make sure all of the ingredients are whisked together. You will notice white dots in my photos, that’s because I heated the water first, and some of the flour started to cook. Make sure to mix all of the ingredients well so this doesn’t happen (it’s not the end of the world if it does).
  3. Turn your stove onto medium heat.
  4. The play dough will start to cook quickly. The process can take anywhere from 1-3 minutes depending on how hot your stove gets.
  5. Keep stirring the mixture with a big wooden spoon and prevent it from cooking. Frequently, scrap the bottom of the pot so the dough doesn’t stick to the bottom. The dough will start to solidify quite quickly (it’s a great arm workout).
  6. Keep stirring until the mixture becomes a solid ball of dough.
  7. Dump the ball of dough onto the counter and let it sit for 2 mins.
  8. Once it has cooled, knead the dough until it becomes smooth.
  9. Make a small hole in the middle of the dough and add in the glycerin. This step is optional, the glycerin will make the play dough super soft.
  10. Knead in the glycerin.
  11. Roll the dough into a log and cut in equal sections.
  12. Add the food colouring to each section of the dough. At this point, I really like to get the kids involved. Leo is at the age where he really enjoys making different colours with the food colouring. He is currently learning that red and blue make purple.
  13. Try not to mix the colours, this will help the Play Dough last longer. Store in a Tupperware container at room temperature. The dough can last up to 3 months.
