Tame Your Temptations

1. We all get tempted to spend now and again. It feels like the cards are stacked against us.

• Society values consumption. We are on this planet to spend.
• Marketers are better than ever at tapping into our brains/weaknesses.
• Banks are more than willing to extend us the credit.
• Brains love the dopamine shot that comes with getting what we want.

2. Where do you start in taming your temptations?

• To “tame”, you need to “name”. Your temptations are different from mine. So what I need to do is different from you.

• Same as with food: I could be surrounded by bags of chips and I wouldn’t be tempted. But we made cookie pizza on Sunday. I could eat the entire thing.

• Name yours: Kids clothing? Shoes? Travel? Jewelry? Renovations?

• Mine is sales on clothing. I am not a great shopper, so I can sucked in by the price, but don’t love the thing. (Snowboarder jacket – 10 years).

• I end up buying things that are a great price, but that I didn’t love

3. You’ve named it. Then what?

• Figure out which ones actually matter. How much does it cost? If your temptation is timeshare condos, that’s a bigger issue than if is stationary supplies (which I love, by the way. Uniball pens, paper clips).

• We have fixed level of willpower. Use it on what really matters.

• The “Latte Factor” is a red herring for most people. What are the temptations you want to tame?

4. You recommend you “write the story of succumbing”.

• If you want to interrupt the pattern, you need to understand the pattern. So write it down. Bullet form. Where are you? What happens?

• I got a flyer about a sale on custom shirts. Great price. But can’t try them on first and high risk they won’t fit. Better for me to spend $80 for a shirt that first than $50 for one that doesn’t really fit.

• Understand triggers: I eat treats when I’m annoyed. Some people shop. Awareness of the triggers is key.

5. What do you do about it?

• Remove temptation: Read this great book called “The Year of Less” by Cait Flanders. She committed to a shopping ban for a year.
o No stores: The big change was not going into stores. If she didn’t go she didn’t buy.
o Unsubscribe to promotional emails.

• Add something else instead: Remove the crackers from cupboard, add cucumber. Remove the trip to mall. Add a trip to the community pool.

• Build in limits: Go cash only when clubbing. Or Christmas shopping.

• Take a time out: Use the 24-hour rule. Free and immediate delivery is a problem. Instead, when you see it. Put it on hold. Bookmark it. Don’t buy it right way.

• Keep a list: Write down what you want. Pacify your brain. Not the same as having it, but at least the idea is captured.

What is temptation bundling?

• Bundle your temptation with something you’re procrastinating on. Research out of Wharton Business School. The researcher only listened to her favorite podcast while exercising.

• If your temptation is food court lunch, pack your lunch while listening to a favourite podcast.

Fear of Breaking Up

• Research found that people who fear being single tend to settle for less in their relationships (Source: University of Toronto, 2013)
• Research from University of California (2016) found those that embrace being single experience more psychological growth than married people
• Research says 85% of dating ends in breakups (only 2 endings – marriage or break-up)!!

WHY Do People Stay Stuck In Their Relationship?
• Its familiar and breaking up in uncertain
• Afraid to be alone (“need” versus “want” a partner)

• Strong social groups together
• Don’t want to date anyone else (“He’s the best option at the moment”)
• Financially its better (ex. living together is more economical)
• Some see it as a status (“I have a boyfriend”)

(1) Do A Relationship Audit
• Stop and really think about what you want! What are the Top #10 qualities you are looking for in a partner

(2) Ask Your Trusted Advisors / Friends / Family To Identify Blind-Spots
• Relationships are tricky and we all have blind-spots! Ask 2-3 of your close friends (who you think give great advice!!!) – their honest opinion about your relationship. Strengths + weaknesses. Do NOT make your decision on what they say – just listen to hear their input.

(3) Aim For “Happy” With Yourself First!
• Relationships will not make us happy – happiness is the job of each person!
• Aim to be happy with yourself FIRST! The best relationships are when 2 happy/fulfilled people come together (not 2 half people)

• Focus on developing you (building friendships; starting a new hobby, exercising, eating well, taking a course) – this will help you feel better, more confident adding more energy to the relationship AND greater perspective about what to do regarding your relationship!
