Daily wear and tear on your backyard deck means it’s very important to maintain it. Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault shares her tips and tricks to make the tedious task easier.

Tools:

– Benjamin Moore’s exterior stain prep products: Remove, Restore, Brighten, Clean

– Sanding block and pole

– Power washer

– Scrub brush

– Latex gloves

– Goggles

– Plastic drop cloths

– Benjamin Moore exterior stain brush

Tips:

Prior to beginning any deck preparation, ensure that all surrounding plant life is properly covered with plastic drop cloths.

Depending on the current condition of your deck, select the appropriate cleaning product and carefully follow recommended application directions.

Once the cleaning product has been applied and thoroughly rinsed, sand all wood surfaces with a sanding block and pole. If the surface requires more thorough sanding, consider renting a commercial grade sander.

Clean entire surface thoroughly with a power washer to ensure all loose particles have been removed.

Allow the deck surface to dry for at least 24 hours prior to applying the first coat of stain.
