Here at Cityline.ca, we love talking about books and what we’re reading and loving right now. In our weekly feature, Friday Reads, we give you a behind-the-scenes look at what Cityline guest experts and staff members are reading, as well as sharing the current picks of some of our viewers. This week, we’re taking a peek at the bookshelves of Suzanne Gardner, Kathy Buckworth, and one of our viewers!
Suzanne Gardner, Cityline.ca’s web content coordinator is reading Sleeping Funny by Miranda Hill (Doubleday Canada). This debut short story collection contains nine unlinked stories, all of which seem to take place in world’s that are slightly askew. “These stories are surprisingly funny and are constantly catching me off-guard with their somewhat off-kilter wit,” says Suzanne. “Miranda Hill is clearly a very gifted storyteller and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this collection.”
Kathy Buckworth, Cityline‘s parenting expert is reading Mick Jagger by Philip Norman (Doubleday Canada). This new biography on one of the biggest names in music covers his life from youth to present day, including all the sordid and dirty details. “It’s quite a talent to take the life story of arguably the world’s biggest, most outrageous and philandering rock and roll idol and make it as boring as if Jagger had continued on with his studies at the London School of Economics, but Norman somehow manages to do it,” says Kathy. “I skipped entire sections.”
Cityline.ca viewer caroleg commented on last week’s Friday Reads post to tell us that she’s reading Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon (Harper Collins). This latest book from the bestselling novelist follows the lives of two long-time record store owners as a megastore threatens to open down the street. “Set in Oakland, California, Chabon introduces his characters in his
usual brilliant style which is very dense and highly visual. I am
looking forward to reading the rest of this novel,” she says.
