DIY snakeskin side table makeover
Materials:
Faux snakeskin wrapping paper or fabric
Small occasional table
Wood filler (to repair table if necessary)
Screw driver (to remove any table hardware)
120 and 240 Grit Sandpaper and sanding block or electrical sander
Mineral spirits and damp cloth
Painters Drop cloth
Protective face mask N95
Mod Podge (matte or gloss) or Elmer’s White School Glue
Small inexpensive paint brush
Scissors and /or sharp utility craft knife
Long ruler, metal yard stick or straight edge
Clear acrylic finishing spray (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the table: Use 120 and 240 grit sandpaper and block or electric orbital sander to smooth the table surfaces if necessary. Remove any drawer knobs. Fill in any large dents in the table with wood filler and sand smooth when dry for the best finish. Lastly, wipe the table surfaces clean with mineral spirits and a damp cloth to remove any residue.
NOTE: Make sure to use a protective face mask when sanding. A drop cloth underneath the table will help keep the mess to a minimum.
2. Use the ruler and scissors or sharp utility craft knife to measure and cut pieces of fabric or gift wrap large enough to cover the legs, top, sides, drawer and any other sections of the table.
3. Working one section at a time, brush on a thin layer of the white glue (mixed with a small amount of water to thin the glue if necessary) or mod podge onto the table. Also brush a thin layer of glue to the underside of the fabric or gift wrap and then affix in place onto the table. Smooth out any air bubbles using your fingers. Also, carefully trim any excess paper or fabric along the edges if needed with the scissors and craft knife.
TIP: Use the tip of the craft knife to poke very tiny holes in any bubbles to let the air escape. Also, remove any drawers and decoupage separately.
TIP: For the best durability, brush on 3 or 4 coats over the paper or fabric, letting each coat dry completely before brushing on the next coat.
4. Trim any excess paper or fabric as required with the scissors and utility knife. Ensure any loose edges are thoroughly glued down.
5. Replace any table hardware and accessorize the table top to your décor!
OPTIONAL: Spray a finishing coat of acrylic spray for the most durable and attractive finish.
