Materials required:

  • Artwork of your choice
  • Standard white glue
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  •  Small artist’s brush
  • Arts and crafts / beauty embellishments (available at art craft and dollar stores)
    • Glitter
    • Rhinestones
    • Faux jewel stones
    • Beads
    • Faux jewelry
    • Faux gemstones
    • Faux flowers
    • Faux eyelashes
  • OPTIONAL:
    • Blank artist canvas, colour of your choice
      • For this project we used:
        • Audrey Hepburn – Benjamin Moore Hot Lips 2077-30
        • Wall Colour – Benjamin Moore Banana Yellow 2022-40
  • Enlarged image, photo or poster
  • Decoupage medium (i.e. Mod Podge)

Instructions:

  1. Select desired art to embellish.  Any kind art or photograph stretched onto a canvas works best.  Art can be purchased at various art and home decor stores or created at a photo lab digital image center that can enlarge and transfer photographs and digital images to various sized stretch canvas frame.
    • TIP: Enlarged photographs or posters can also be affixed onto a blank or painted Artists Canvas with a couple of coats a decoupage medium (i.e. mod podge or diluted white standard glue) applied overtop of the entire image and canvas. Be careful to remove excess decoupage medium and smooth out the image with your fingers to remove any trapped air bubbles.
  2. Start by imagining which features of the art can be embellished.  Think about what kind and how much of an embellishment would provide the most attractive effect.
  3. Use a glue gun or a small dab of white glue to affix an embellishment to a specific area of the art.  For instance, a portrait of a Lady can be embellished by using hot glue to affix a string of faux pearl beads or jewelry along the neckline.  Try embellishing clothes by gluing on i.e. gemstones or buttons.
  4. To create a glittered lipstick or glittered dress/clothes effect: apply a thin layer of white glue along the lips or clothing with an artists brush and dust over generously with glitter. Then holding the artwork vertically and tap at the back of the canvas to shake off and remove excess glitter.
    • To create more depth to the eyes, glue faux eyelashes along the eyelids.
