Suiting up for the ice

Frank Ferragine teaches what gear you'll need every step of the way in your child's journey towards becoming a hockey player.

Attention, all future hockey moms and dads! As winter approaches, your kid may be wanting to get into the game, so Frank Ferragine has some tips on how to get started. (He’s a hockey dad, too — he knows!) What’s most important is to get the right equipment for the right price and in the right condition, to make sure that your daughter or son isn’t going to have an accident on the ice.

It might seem like a lot of gear to get, but don’t be intimidated! Here’s what you’ll need each step of the way in your child’s journey towards becoming a hockey player.

When your child is learning to skate, you’ll need:

  • Comfortable clothing (to wear underneath all the gear)
  • Shin pads
  • Skates
  • Hockey helmet
  • Hockey gloves

But as your child starts to progress into learning the sport, you’ll need to add on to the basics. In some cases, you can actually get a basic kit for hockey gear, which will include many of the things you need for your budding skater. But don’t fret about the hockey socks and jersey — these are typically provided to your child by their team.

When your child is joining a hockey team, you’ll need:

  • Jock
  • Hockey pants
  • Neck guard
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Mouth guard
  • Hockey stick
