Audit your makeup bag: what to toss, keep, and buy

Bryan Barron talks about seasonal skin care and why it's important to re-evaluate which beauty products you're using.

With a change in the weather, we realize that some of the things we use and carry with us aren’t going to work the same way in the fall and winter as they did in the spring and summer. Bryan Barron, co-author of Don’t Go To the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, talks about seasonal skin care and why the transition from summer to fall is a great time to re-evaluate which beauty products we’re using.

  • Toss that drying, residue-forming bar of soap. It’s time to treat your skin to a gentle moisturizing cleanser that refreshes without leaving the skin feeling dry and tight. These types of cleansers remove makeup, too. Many of us experience drier skin during fall and winter, so consider a slightly richer, more lotion-like cleanser, or even a cleansing oil, instead of the cleanser you used all summer. Or try a creamy, moisturizing body wash as the weather gets colder and the humidity drops. This will help prevent itchy, dry skin. A wet cotton washcloth can be a great body exfoliant. No scrub or loofah needed!
  • Keep using that daytime moisturizer with SPF! We need sun protection year-round, not just when the sun is out during summer months. The sun’s rays might not be as strong as they were then, but it’s necessary to have that SPF to protect our skin even in the drier and colder months.
  • Toss that lightweight moisturizer if skin tends to get drier during the fall and winter seasons. Buy an emollient-rich anti-aging moisturizer that can be used on the face and around the eyes (hey, you can toss that eye cream!).
  • Toss that waterproof mascara you used all summer. It’s due for a replacement with a gentler, non-waterproof type. Be sure you’re removing all of your eye makeup every night before bed. Letting traces of eye makeup build up is a leading cause of red, puffy eyes in the morning! Use a cotton swab to ensure every last speck is off.
  • Keep the nude. Those nude or neutral-toned eyeshadows you rely on every day can stay in your makeup kit, but consider buying one of fall’s luxe metallic eyeshadow palettes. These are some of the newest trends in eyeshadow makeup to really enhance the eyes.
  • Toss that face scrub. It’s too abrasive and you can’t scrub away breakouts or other imperfections. Buy a leave-on AHA exfoliant to improve multiple signs of aging and help bind moisture to skin’s surface.
