Stylist Janice Meredith gets fashionably crafty with her creative DIY gifts made from old clothes.
Old t-shirt scarf
Materials:
- T-shirt (the larger the better, 100% cotton rolls better, no seams is best for the torso)
- Scissors
Method:
Cut the t-shirt across under the arms.
Measuring 1/3 up from the hem, draw a chalk line width-wise across the t-shirt.
Cut stripes of 2cm wide bands up the t-shirt from the hem to the chalk mark.
Continue to cut the fabric ribbons all the way around the t-shirt.
Pull the fringes down to give them curl and lengthen them.
Tie two fringes into a knot securing it near the end of the cut/fringe.
Separate the knotted fringe and taking one fringe, knot it with the fringe beside it.
Continue around the t-shirt.
Cut-out heart t-shirt
Materials:
- Old t-shirt
- Swatch of contrasting fabric
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Straight pins
- Needle/thread
Method:
Cut the seamed detail from around the collar and the sleeves.
Using a stencil, chalk the shape you wish to cut.
Using a ruler, draw chalk marks horizontally across the shape about 3/4″ apart.
Carefully cut the chalk lines staying inside the shape and cutting only the top fabric.
With the t-shirt inside out, pin your contrasting fabric to the inside and stitch it secure.
Sew each strip down to the contrasting fabric.
Washer and ribbon necklace
Materials:
- Metal washers (approx. 24)
- Cosgrain ribbon (approx. 1 yard)
Method:
Measure out how long you would like your necklace to be, taking into consideration the length to tie a bow.
Use clear tape to harden the end of the ribbon into a point to help with feeding it into the washer.
Feed ribbon through washer 1.
Slide along past the middle but with enough length left to tie in the back.
Feed ribbon up through washer 2.
Loop over the side of washer 2 and feed ribbon down through washer 1.
Slide along so the ribbon is tight and so washer 2 is resting flat on washer 1.
