4 magical (nearby) summer getaways that won't break the bank

Soak up all that travel season has to offer with this guide to getting away on a budget.

Summer: the season of travel. We see our friends and family packing up their suitcases, bidding farewell to everyday life and soaking up all that vacation has to offer.

Let’s be real. We have a little bit of FOMO.

What you may not realize is that getting away doesn’t have to cut into your life’s savings. Check out these fun + affordable options that’ll make your summer sweet (and get you off of your couch):

Summer in the City

Summer in the city

For those who crave hustle and bustle, a city vacay is for you! Check out centrally-located hotels in your destination city, enjoy local theater and restaurants, and if the kids are tagging along – children’s museums! For an additional exciting activity, plan your trip around when a festival (food, music or performance) is in town. These events are typically pretty affordable, and give an already memorable trip a special touch.

Staycation

Staycation

If you don’t want to venture too far away from home, a staycation is your best bet. These experiences can be as inexpensive or extravagant as you’d like, starting with choosing to stay at home or in a hotel. Think about what you’d tell tourists to do in your city, and try that. This can be anything from visiting museums, to aquariums, a favourite park, to dining at a new restaurant.

Glamping

Glamping: camping, but better. Many camp sites now offer glamping accommodations for those who aren’t big on ‘roughing it’. Adventure seekers: visit a National Park for hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking. If you’re looking to glamp outside the box, stay in an interesting location like a vineyard… or obstacle course! Regardless of your plans, don’t forget to include a digital detox to spend time connecting with loved ones… over a campfire with s’mores. Yes, please!

Beach Break

While the pristine waters of the Caribbean sound incredibly enticing, you don’t have to head to the islands for a beautiful beach. Canada has two ocean coasts that are ready and waiting to be explored… by YOU! The Great Lakes also have spectacular beaches with long stretches of soft white sand and crystal clear (bonus: non salt!) waters. Renting a cottage or staying at a hotel on or near the beachfront is recommended if choosing this form of travel, as this will maximize your time in the sand.
